The idea behind this year's festival
Formula Mundi is a theme based festival. This time "reflect - evolve - create" is a call for works as well as the topic itself. We would like to invite filmmakers from all over the world to observe and analyze closely the changing environments we all live in. Economic changes, disasters or significant political changes lead to dynamic processes, on a micro as well as on a macro level.
By moving the festival to Cairo, Egypt, we would like to encourage especially filmmakers from the arab world to participate. Tunisia, Libya, Syria and Egypt are just some of the countries that recently faced rapid and severe changes. The alteration is still in the process and it is hard to foresee where the path is leading.
The news are full of information about whole states having to face bankruptcy, social movements arise to claim social justice or how governments try to find solutions. But what happens to the individual? How is a shop owner in Athens influenced by the economical crisis? How does a father in Fukushima earn a living for his family after his home was contaminated? What backlash former public employees in Libya have to stand?
We consider film as the one media to authentically capture these moments of change. Therefore Formula Mundi calls for documentaries, short films or experimental footage that reclaims the ongoing diversity of our societies and the lives we lead.
